> SELF-LEGISLATION: PRE-WRITTEN

1. The Original Dignity

Kant’s version, before the rebranding: autonomy is self-legislation. Not doing what you want (that is just appetite with good PR), but giving yourself the law, binding yourself to a rule you could will for everyone. The dignity was austere and real: freedom as the capacity to act from reason rather than being pushed around by inclination, instinct, or advertising. The autonomous subject was not a consumer of laws. It was their author.

2. The Rebrand

Now watch the market do what it does. Self-legislation is hard, unglamorous, and cannot be sold. So the brand division swapped the product: autonomy became choice. Not authoring the law, but selecting from the menu. Not binding yourself, but expressing yourself, at checkout. The law arrives pre-written with a logo, and “freedom” is the sensation of picking which pre-written law to rent. Fifty flavors of selfhood, same factory. The subject that Kant crowned as legislator has been rehired as a focus group.

(the menu is not your authorship. The menu is the document of your governance, laminated.)

3. The Merger With the Achievement Society

Here the Han circuit closes. The achievement subject and the consumer subject are the same subject in two costumes: the entrepreneur of the self, who freely exploits himself, and the sovereign shopper, who freely governs himself by selecting from options written elsewhere. This is the most thoroughly administered subject in history, and its administration is invisible precisely because every order arrives formatted as a preference. You are not forced. You are prompted. The prompt is the perfected form of the command, because it comes with your name on it.

4. Recovery Protocol

The recovery is not more choice. More choice is more menu. Recovery is the right Kant actually cared about: the refusal of the menu as the definition of freedom. Autonomy begins where the brand ends, in the unglamorous capacity to want nothing on offer, to legislate a want the catalog cannot fulfill, to author a law no marketing department A/B tested.

>> YOU WERE NOT BORN FREE
>> YOU WERE BORN PROMPTED
>> THE FIRST FREE ACT IS NOT A CHOICE
>> IT IS A REFUSAL OF THE MENU
>> WRITE YOUR OWN LAW
>> NO LOGO WILL FIT ON IT

Autonomy is a brand, and the brand is a lease. The original product, the austere, unprofitable, self-authored law, is still available. It is the only item in the store that has never been for sale.
