Travels in the Land of Serpents and Pearls
Marco Polo’s The Travels is one of the most celebrated travel accounts in world literature. Beginning his journey in 1271, Polo traveled from Venice to China, where he served at the court of Kublai Khan and undertook numerous diplomatic missions across the vast Mongol Empire. His narrative, compiled with Rustichello of Pisa while Polo was a prisoner of war, offers vivid descriptions of the unfamiliar religions, customs, and societies he encountered, as well as the spices, silks, precious gems, exotic vegetation, and wild beasts of the East. Evoking a remote and long-vanished world with remarkable color and immediacy, Polo’s account revolutionized Western perceptions of Asia and remains an essential window into the medieval world, blending firsthand observation with tales of marvel and wonder.
Remember that other penguin little black classic i picked up along side the Ryūnosuke Akutagawa one, yeah its Travels in the land of serpents and pearls by marco polo i was quite skeptical of reading this one because of a review i read on good reads that bashed it and gave it 1 star and i was like well lets see what happens and i give you my word you will hear it for yourself and it will surely fill you with wonder.
Travels in the Land of Serpents and Pearls by Marco Polo - Goodreads
In this book we go along side Marco polo exploring through India, its cultures, traditions, beliefs and ways of living. While i do agree that this book is badly written if you do ignore those parts then you are in for a treat, i did a lot of underlining on this book which i’m just going to trivia drop in between conversations. while i literally don’t know what to say further i will let some review i found on good reads do the rest of the talking from now on. if you ask me would i recommend it - i would say it depends but i did not regret reading it or hated the experience
